Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
ACM is a professional association for people interested in computing, computer science, research, education, and technology careers.
Since January 2026, ACM-published research in the ACM Digital Library has been openly accessible to everyone. You do not need an ACM membership simply to read ACM research.
For most people learning frontend development, ACM membership is optional. It becomes more useful if you want to explore computer science more deeply, join professional communities, attend conferences, or pursue further study or a career in computing.
ACM offers several membership options, learning resources, and optional subscriptions. This guide focuses on Student Membership, with a brief comparison of Professional Membership at the end.
How to Apply
Apply through the ACM membership website and choose the Student Membership option.
Student Membership is intended for full-time students at accredited educational institutions or equivalent. Students at open universities or in distance-learning programs may also qualify, depending on their enrollment status and institution. If you’re unsure, check the current eligibility requirements or contact ACM Member Services.
ACM also offers reduced membership rates for residents of certain economically developing countries. Check the options available for your country and review any optional subscriptions before paying.
Things to Know
You Don’t Need Membership to Read ACM Research
ACM moved its publications to an open-access model in January 2026.
This means ACM journals, conference proceedings, magazines, and other ACM-published research can be read without purchasing a membership. Digital Library Basic provides this free access.
Membership offers additional benefits, but you do not need to join simply to read ACM research.
Digital Library Premium Offers Additional Research Tools
ACM Digital Library Premium adds tools for finding, organizing, and following research, including advanced search, research analytics, saved searches, alerts, and bulk downloads.
Premium also includes the ACM Guide to Computing Literature, which is not included in Basic. This bibliographic index helps you discover computing research from ACM and other publishers, but does not automatically provide full-text access to other publishers’ paid content.
Basic is generally enough if you want to find and read ACM papers. Premium may be useful if you regularly conduct literature reviews, track new publications, or work with many papers at once. It requires a separate subscription or access through a participating institution.
Check Access Through Your Institution
Before paying for additional learning resources or subscriptions, check what your university or library already provides.
Your institution may already offer Digital Library Premium, learning platforms, databases, books, or other resources that overlap with the ACM services you are considering.
Skills Bundle Is Separate
ACM offers a paid Skills Bundle add-on for Professional Members, combining its O’Reilly and Skillsoft Percipio learning collections.
Student Members can access ACM’s Skillsoft Percipio collection, as stated in the Percipio FAQs. This does not mean that the full Skills Bundle or O’Reilly access is included with standard Student Membership.
You must have a paid Professional Membership to purchase the ACM Skills Bundle. Student Members cannot purchase this add-on, and O’Reilly access is not included with Student Membership.
If O’Reilly is your main reason for considering ACM, see the O’Reilly Online Learning guide first. Before paying, confirm your eligibility for Professional Membership and the total membership-plus-bundle cost with ACM Member Services.
Some ACM Resources Are Available Without Membership
Resources such as ACM TechTalks and ByteCast are available without a paid membership. Explore these public resources before deciding whether membership is useful for you.
Use ACM Resources to Improve Your Technical English
ACM’s talks, interviews, publications, newsletters, and learning resources can also be useful for non-native English speakers (and even native speakers may find them helpful for becoming familiar with computing terminology and academic writing).
Following computing and technology content can help you become more familiar with technical vocabulary, professional communication, and the way concepts are discussed in industry and academic settings.
What You Get (with Student Membership)
Student Membership offers learning resources, publications, updates, and opportunities to participate in the computing community. Some resources listed below are also publicly available.
Learning and Career Resources
- ACM Learning Center: Learning and professional-development resources covering computing topics.
- Skillsoft Percipio: Access to ACM’s learning collection, including courses, e-books, audiobooks, practice labs, and certification preparation resources. Certification preparation does not include the actual certification exams.
- Career and Job Center: Technology job listings, career resources, and related services.
Publications and Updates
- Communications of the ACM: The digital edition of ACM’s publication covering developments across computing.
- XRDS: ACM’s magazine aimed at students.
- TechNews: Technology news and updates from ACM.
Communities and Events
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs): Opportunities to join communities focused on areas such as programming languages, human-computer interaction, graphics, systems, and other computing fields.
- ACM Chapters: Opportunities to meet other students and computing professionals through local and university communities.
- ACM Conferences: Member rates for eligible conferences, alongside opportunities to volunteer and participate in the computing community.
SIGs, chapters, and events may charge separate membership or registration fees.
ACM Email Forwarding
ACM membership includes an acm.org email forwarding address. You can use it as a professional contact address on:
- Your CV, portfolio, and personal website.
- GitHub, LinkedIn, and other professional profiles.
- Correspondence with ACM chapters, conferences, and technical communities.
- Academic or computing-related correspondence.
It forwards incoming messages to another email account you control rather than providing a separate inbox.
Professional Membership
ACM Professional Membership offers career resources, professional networking, publications, technology newsletters, and member rates for eligible conferences.
Student and Professional Membership share many community and career benefits. Student Membership has a lower fee and includes student-focused resources such as XRDS. Professional Membership includes print and digital editions of Communications of the ACM and voting rights in ACM officer elections; standard Student Membership includes the digital edition of Communications of the ACM.
Paid Professional Members can purchase the optional ACM Skills Bundle, which provides access to ACM’s O’Reilly and Skillsoft Percipio learning collections. Student Members already have access to ACM’s Skillsoft Percipio collection, but the full Skills Bundle is offered to paid Professional Members. Digital Library Premium is an optional paid subscription for both membership types.
Reduced regional rates may be available, and a discounted Student Transition membership is available for the first year after graduation.
